Upgrading from StoreFront 2000 Standard to StoreFront 2000 Pro |

StoreFront 2000 Standard is designed to use an Access database, which is usually sufficient for most e-commerce webs. Unfortunately, Access can efficiently handle no more than 20 to 25 simultaneous connections to the database. Please note that this doesn’t mean 20-25 simultaneous users, but 20 to 25 users making requests of the database at the same time. A hundred or more people may be browsing your site, but only a dozen may be browsing ASP pages that require a database connection. When the connection limit of Access is exceeded, all ASP pages in the web will stop running, and the server must be restarted before the ASP pages will run again. As your StoreFront site grows in popularity and traffic increases, the likelihood of this kind of failure increases proportionately. Likewise, the results of such a complete failure become proportionately more disastrous.
To circumvent this problem, LaGarde, Inc. also distributes StoreFront 2000 Pro. StoreFront 2000 Pro has the same functionality as the Access version and uses identical interfaces, but is designed to use a SQL Server database in place of the Access database. SQL Server is an enterprise level database application which can support tens of thousands of simultaneous connections to a single database, effectively eliminating the possibility that the connection limit will be exceeded. Upgrading from StoreFront 2000 Standard to StoreFront 2000 Pro will increase the stability and performance of your web and prepare the site to handle increased traffic and sales. The upgrade can be performed in a few simple steps, and all of the ASP product pages that you have created with StoreFront 2000 Standard will continue to function with StoreFront 2000 Pro.
-
Contact your host. Ensure that your host supports SQL Server and that a competent SQL Server administrator is part of their staff. A skilled host is vital to the smooth operation of the site and the ease of the upgrade process.
-
Install the StoreFront 2000 Pro program. Make sure that all other applications are closed when you begin the installation. If you downloaded the file from www.storefront.net, simply double-click it to begin the installation. If you purchased the program from a retail outlet, simply insert the StoreFront 2000 Pro CD in your CD-ROM drive to begin the installation.
-
Upgrade the files in the web. After installing the upgrade, open FrontPage 2000. In FrontPage, use File|Open|Web to open the StoreFront web you plan to upgrade to StoreFront 2000 Pro, then click the icon for the StoreFront Import Wizard, or else select the Import Wizard from the StoreFront menu. Click Yes when prompted to proceed with the import wizard, then select "StoreFront Pro" when prompted to choose Standard or Pro files. The import wizard will begin importing the files for StoreFront 2000 Pro into the web, prompting for confirmation each time a file may be overwritten. Click Yes to overwrite for global.asa, all StoreFront ASP application files, and all inc files. Do NOT overwrite any of your customized htm pages or the storefront.mdb database.
Note: if you are using a separate secure location for your ssl folder, you may need to open the secure location in FrontPage and manually replace all ASP, asa, and inc application files with the new files from the storefrontpro.tem. If you are uncertain of the address of your secure location, contact your host for assistance.
-
Upsize the database. Once you have imported the Pro files into your web, the SQL Server database must be created by upsizing the existing Access database. For detailed instructions describing the upgrade process, please refer to our knowledge base article describing the process.
-
Recreate the database connection within the web. While the web is open in FrontPage 2000, select Tools|Web Settings|Database tab. Click Add, then select Network database connection. Select SQL Server, enter the IP of the SQL Server in the server name field, and enter the name of the database in the Database Name field. Click OK. Click Advanced, then enter your SQL Server user name and password in the appropriate fields. Click OK, then OK once more. Now, highlight the new connection and click Verify, then Apply. This will complete the upgrade process. Test the web, and contact StoreFront Support if you encounter any errors.
