ASP pages will not load

Posted Friday, April 23, 2004

StoreFront users may sometimes encounter problems with their site's ASP pages not loading correctly when viewed in a browser. Instead, pages may open in an editor, may hang indefinitely until the browser is stopped, or the browser may try to download the file. Each of these problems and the issues that cause them are described in more detail below:

Browser attempts to download file: Internet Explorer, Netscape, and most other widely-supported browsers respond to files they can't execute or interpret by asking the user if they would like to download the file. If your site is configured to disallow the execution of script files such as the Active Server Pages used by StoreFront, browsers will respond by attempting to download pages. To resolve this problem, contact your host and ask them to configure your site to allow the execution of scripts.

File opens in an editor: in some cases, ASP pages will be opened in the associated editor program (usually Dreamweaver or FrontPage) when you try to view them in a browser. There are normally two causes for this problem:

  1. Scripts are not allowed to run in the site where the pages are located. For more information about this problem and how to resolve it, see the preceding issue ("Browser attempts to download file").

  2. You are trying to view the pages on a drive location; i.e., you are trying to view the pages when they are located on your Desktop or another drive location such as C:\My Documents\My Webs\myWebStore\. In order for ASP and other scripts to run correctly, they must be located on a server location such as http://www.myweb.com or http://localhost/webstore1/. If you don't have access to a web site for testing purposes, you can usually install IIS or the Personal Web Server on your local machine for testing purposes; for more installation about installing PWS or IIS, click here.

Pages hang indefinitely: sometimes you may try to view one of your site's ASP pages but, instead of loading, timing out or displaying an error message, the browser will hang indefinitely while it waits for the page to load. There are multiple possible causes for this problem:

  1. Your web store may be down. Some browsers, Internet Explorer 6.0 in particular, do not always recognize when a web site is down and will continue trying to access the site even in the absence of a timely response from the web server. Try using ICMP tools such as ping and tracert to determine whether your site is down, or call your host and ask them to check.

  2. The IIS service for your site may need to be stopped and restarted. Most hosts include regular server reboots or restarts in their normal regimen of server maintenance. In some cases, such as when a site's Access database is overloaded, stopping and restarting the site's IIS service is the only way to resolve the problem.

  3. You may have Norton Antivirus Script Blocking installed. Try disabling this option and rebooting. More information can be found in the Symantec Knowledge Base, article ID 2001032111331506.

If, after investigating the possible causes listed above, the problem still occurs, contact StoreFront Support for further assistance.
